Curatorial notes

Hendrik Abraham Klinkhamer created this subtly toned pencil drawing of several sailing ships in the 19th century. It evokes a sense of quietude and reflection. Klinkhamer lived during a time of significant social and political change in the Netherlands, as the country transitioned from a monarchy to a more democratic society. Looking at the image, consider the labor required to operate these vessels and the lives of the sailors, often from the working class, who navigated them. Their identities were forged by the sea, their livelihoods dependent on its bounty and its perils. The ships themselves, symbols of trade and exploration, also represent the complex relationship between humans and nature. Klinkhamer does not create a heroic scene, instead there is an understated realism, inviting viewers to contemplate the everyday lives of those connected to the maritime world, and perhaps to reflect on our own connection to the waters that sustain us.
