Gene Davis made this painting, Ice Box, and well, I don't know exactly when. But what strikes me right away is this incredible dedication to the simple stripe. It’s like he set up some rules and then just went for it. These aren't stripes like, BAM! It’s more of a whisper, a subtle dance of cream and pale yellows. The paint itself seems pretty thin, almost like a stain, which lets the canvas breathe. And that surface? It's smooth, like you could run your hand across it and feel almost nothing. What I love about Davis is how he just kept going with this idea, like Sol LeWitt with his walls. I see a connection with Agnes Martin, too, that quiet, meditative vibe. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t have to shout to be heard. Sometimes, the most powerful stuff is the stuff that whispers.
