This painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat looks like it was thrown together quickly. But, like all good paintings, I'm sure it took longer to make than it looks. I’m drawn to the central black section bisected by that pale blue sword. The paint is thick here, isn’t it? You can see the layering, the drips. The tension between those colors, this division, feels very physical to me. I see a metaphor for struggle, maybe even a kind of self-portrait. All these crazy marks and cartoon references become some sort of code. The text reminds me of Cy Twombly, who also loved to write and draw on his paintings. But with Basquiat it's different, there's more urgency, more noise. It's like he's trying to say everything at once. The painting becomes a kind of diary, full of secrets and half-formed thoughts. It reminds us that art is a process, a conversation, an ongoing exploration.
