This Chinese porcelain bowl, dating from the 17th century, showcases a vibrant blue and white design. The exterior is decorated with a depiction of a scene featuring figures in a boat, possibly a depiction of a journey or a celebration. The bowl's simple form and detailed imagery are typical of Chinese porcelain during this period, often produced for export to Europe, where it was highly prized. The bowl is now part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting the global reach of Asian art and the enduring appeal of its intricate craftsmanship.
Comments
Depicted on one side of this bowl is a landscape with three men in a boat; the other side bears the whole text from the Second Red Cliff Rhapsody by Su Shi. This is the reason why this vessel is known as the ‘Red Cliff bowl.’ The scene presents Su Shi and his friends taking a nocturnal boat ride to the Red Cliff.
