Here's Yolande Delasser's Jar, rendered with watercolor and graphite on paper. The careful shading captures the soft, earthy tones of the pottery and the blue markings of the flower, which must have taken Delasser some time to render. I can imagine Delasser's hand moving deliberately, tracing the curves of the jar, and the delicate petals of the flower, perhaps pausing to consider each detail, each shadow. I'm wondering if she felt a kinship with this vessel? And maybe there's a dialogue here, between the hand of the potter, and the hand of the painter. Two acts of making, mirroring each other. That blue is amazing, and reminiscent of other painters such as Joan Miró. It's like the artist is speaking to us, inviting us to contemplate the beauty of everyday objects, things that can easily go unnoticed. Painting is, after all, a way of seeing, a way of making the world visible.
