This Mezuzah, of unknown date and maker, merges religious tradition with everyday life. Mezuzot, which are affixed to the doorframes of Jewish homes, contain a parchment scroll inscribed with verses from the Torah. They serve as a constant reminder of faith and heritage. This particular mezuzah is made from what appears to be cast metal and wire, and its design departs from traditional forms, and invites us to consider the dialogue between tradition and modernity within Jewish identity. The Star of David, rendered in wire, overlays the stylized representation of the Hebrew letter Shin, which symbolizes God's name. Consider how the clean lines and industrial materials speak to a desire to integrate ancient customs with a contemporary aesthetic. The mezuzah embodies a powerful connection to history, home, and identity, asking us to reflect on how we carry our own traditions forward.

The Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) commands, "And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." To fulfill this commandment, the Shema is written on a tiny scroll of parchment along with a companion passage, Deut. 11:13-21. The scroll is placed in a case and affixed to the right side of every doorpost at an angle while reciting a special blessing. This mezuzah is from the Metropolitan-Mount Sinai Medical Center, which closed in 1991.
