This is a pencil drawing of a nude woman by Vilhelm Lundstrom, and even though we don't know exactly when it was made, it's a beautiful example of mark-making as a process. The drawing feels very immediate, like Lundstrom was trying to capture a fleeting impression. See how the lines are confident but also tentative, almost searching for the right form. There's something really vulnerable and intimate about that, like we're seeing the artist's thought process unfold before our eyes. I'm drawn to the way he uses line to suggest form and volume, especially around the hips. The shading is minimal, but it's enough to give the figure a sense of weight and presence, and there are these little groups of lines. It reminds me a little of Picasso's drawings, or maybe even Matisse, but with its own distinct voice. It's a reminder that art is always in conversation with itself, and that every artist is building on the work of those who came before.
