Vilhelm Lundstrom made this drawing of a standing nude woman with a piece of cloth in her hand, using graphite on paper. Look at the marks he makes! See how they build the figure, bit by bit. He’s all about the line here, using it to suggest the form of the body with an economy that’s really something. You can almost feel him circling and finding the shapes, adjusting as he goes. I bet Lundstrom was thinking about the cubists and how they looked at the body, taking it apart, and putting it back together in new ways. What was he thinking when he made it? Was he trying to catch the light and shadow, or was he more interested in the abstract structure underneath? And what about that piece of cloth she’s holding? It's like a little mystery, adding another layer to the whole thing. He must have been looking at other artists and thinking to himself ‘I can do that’. Painters always build on the ideas of the ones who came before, don’t you think?
