Niels Larsen Stevns made these skeletal sketches on paper, sometime during his lifetime, from 1864 to 1941. Stevns lived through a time of great social and political change, witnessing the rise of industrialization and the changing artistic landscape as new ideas about modernism took hold. These sketches of animal bones are a peek into the artist's process and how he understood the body. By focusing on the skeletal structure, Stevns strips away the exterior, to investigate the foundations of movement and form. The artist captures the underlying architecture that supports life. These sketches might remind us that beneath our own skin and identities, we share a basic anatomy with the creatures around us. They invite reflection on our shared mortality and the structures of power and fragility that both connect and divide us.
