Nicolas Perrey created this portrait of jurist Paolo Staibano sometime in the 17th century using engraving. The most striking aspect of this portrait is how it uses geometric forms to organize the composition. The oval frame dominates, setting a boundary within which Staibano is presented. His figure, rendered with precise lines, is both contained by and contrasts with the circular motif. Observe how the artist uses the oval frame to divide the pictorial space and isolate the figure of the jurist against a curtain backdrop. Within this structure, the lines of the engraving define texture and depth, especially in the fur collar and the intricate patterns of his attire. The book he holds adds another layer, symbolizing knowledge and authority, elements which also structure and inform Staibano's identity. The text surrounding the frame, although decorative, contributes to a semiotic system, as it is through words that the values and attributes of Staibano are defined and communicated. The portrait becomes a study of the interplay between form and function, challenging our understanding of representation.
