Skystudie by Niels Larsen Stevns

Dimensions: 101 mm (height) x 168 mm (width) (bladmaal)

Niels Larsen Stevns made this small watercolor, Skystudie, using fluid washes of color on paper. It's a seemingly simple piece, yet the way the paint interacts with the paper is key to its effect. The artist has exploited the absorbent quality of the paper, allowing the colors to bleed and blend, creating soft, atmospheric effects. Notice how the watercolor doesn't sit on the surface but becomes one with it. This was a conscious choice, a deliberate attempt to capture the fleeting, ephemeral qualities of the sky. Consider also the social context: in Stevns' time, artists often made such studies en plein air, or outdoors, directly observing nature. The portability of watercolor made it ideal for this purpose. This work, then, represents both a close engagement with the environment, and a meditation on the elemental qualities of the materials at hand. Ultimately, Skystudie blurs the boundaries between the act of seeing, the act of making, and the very stuff of the world around us.
