Giorgio Cavallon made this untitled painting using watercolor, and it feels like a record of fleeting impressions. The washes of color, thinly applied, create a luminous effect. Look at the horizontal strokes, how they layer up but also let the light through. The colors blend and bleed into each other in this way that feels kind of natural and organic. The blue at the bottom anchors the whole thing. The texture of the paper adds another layer of interest. In the upper left, there are these grey strokes that seem to hover between representation and abstraction. They might be clouds, or they might just be marks on a page. This kind of ambiguity is what makes painting so compelling, it’s not fixed, it's always open to interpretation. This loose, improvisational style reminds me a bit of some of the early abstract expressionists, like Helen Frankenthaler, who were also exploring the possibilities of color and gesture. It's like Cavallon is participating in this conversation about what painting can be, and how it can capture the world in new and unexpected ways.
