Worden Day made this print called ‘Lone Hunter’ with lithographic ink on paper. Looking at the overlaying of marks, I imagine Day in the studio, layering image upon image, with each colour printed separately. This process is about chance and control. The artist might be thinking about the materiality of the ink, how it sits on the paper, and how it interacts with the other colours. The layered effect is fascinating. I particularly like how the artist uses a network of lines to create a sense of depth. This reminds me of the automatist painters of the time; a way of working and seeing that prioritizes spontaneity and intuition. The title ‘Lone Hunter’ might be a reference to the artist themselves, alone in the studio hunting for images!
