This untitled drawing was made by Vasile Kazar, we think some time in the late 80’s, with what looks like a simple black pen on paper. I can imagine Kazar’s pen scratching away, unsure of where it’s going, one mark leading to the next. I see a man's profile here, but it’s all broken up, like a shattered mirror. The lines are shaky and nervous, but also confident in their own way, like the artist is just letting his hand do the thinking. There’s a sense of urgency in the way the lines pile up on top of each other. I wonder if Kazar was thinking about Picasso or maybe some of the other cubists when he made this. He seems to be asking: How can we show all sides of a thing at once? How can we capture the feeling of a person, not just their appearance? It shows how all artists are having this ongoing conversation, riffing off each other’s ideas, and maybe trying to one-up each other too. It’s all part of this messy, beautiful thing we call art.
