Editor: Here we have Ernst Morace's portrait of Angelica Kauffmann, made sometime in the 18th century. It's quite striking. What resonates with you most when you view this piece? Curator: The oval frame and classical garb immediately evoke a sense of timelessness. Consider the symbols employed: The subject's gaze, directed slightly off-center, suggests intellect and perhaps even a hint of melancholy. What emotions do you think the artist wants to express? Editor: I think that she looks intelligent and thoughtful, not really melancholy. Do you see the portrait referencing ideas or symbols in paintings that Kauffman made? Curator: Precisely. The very act of immortalizing Kauffmann, herself a renowned painter, elevates her to a figure of lasting cultural significance. Her own symbolic language, now reflected back at her. I find that powerful, don’t you? Editor: I see what you mean! I didn't notice that connection, at first. Curator: The symbolic resonance of portraits is often missed.
