This untitled work by Alevtyna Kakhidze is made up of a series of numbered sketches made with some kind of felt tip pen. The drawing is quite spiky, and the lines are very distinct. It's interesting that the artist has chosen to present the work as a series of numbered scenes like some kind of instruction manual. In the fourth scene, we see a figure dressed in a polka dot dress and carrying a handbag, a bizarre caricature with spindly legs, yet the artist encourages us to imitate it. What does it mean? I guess that the artist is asking us to look at the world from different perspectives. If it's ok to laugh at what we see, then what does that say about how we approach the events around us? I am reminded of the work of Philip Guston, who similarly embraced a crude style to tackle difficult subject matter. Art is not always pretty and sometimes things get messy!
