Robert Grosvenor made this untitled piece with found materials, arranging them in a way that feels both haphazard and incredibly deliberate. The corrugated metal roof is the first thing that grabs me, its rusted surface a testament to time and the elements. The support structure seems almost provisional, like something quickly assembled, but the overall effect is one of surprising stability. Then there are the round discs that sit at the ends of the structure. Grosvenor reminds me a little of Richard Serra, especially in the way he uses industrial materials to create forms that are both monumental and intimate. But where Serra’s work is often about weight and gravity, Grosvenor’s has a lightness, an almost playful quality. It’s a construction, yes, but also a kind of invitation to imagine, to play, to dream. And isn’t that what art is all about?
