This is "3 Objects" by Simone Forti. It is an exploration of movement, balance, and interaction, key themes in Forti's pioneering work, which developed in the context of the Judson Dance Theater in the 1960s. Each of the three simple wooden boxes on wheels invites exploration of the relationship between bodies and elementary structures. The ropes attached to the boxes extend the possibility for interaction, becoming lines of connection, which tie the boxes together. Another rope hangs vertically from a support fixed to the wall, creating a point of reference. Forti’s work reflects the radical spirit of the 1960s, challenging traditional notions of dance and sculpture, and blurring the boundaries between performer, object, and audience. As Forti once said, "I was interested in finding a way of moving that was not about expression, but about problem-solving." "3 Objects" invites us to consider the relationship between objects, space, and the moving body. In this work we recognize the connection to Forti’s broader practice, one that continues to challenge our understanding of performance and the role of the body in space.
