William L. Antrim, who lived from 1855 to 1995, created this watercolor work of art of a "Door Knocker." The image presents us with a sphinx-like figure atop the knocker. It prompts reflection on how the architecture of domestic life is laden with signs of power, gender, and historical legacies. Door knockers, often overlooked, demarcate boundaries between public and private spheres. Antrim's choice to depict the knocker, complete with its griffin, invites us to consider the narratives of protection and privilege that such symbols embody. It’s hard to know what Antrim thought about all of this. The sphinx, a figure borrowed from ancient traditions, often represents guardianship and wisdom. It may make you think about how the design elements of our homes often tell stories about who we imagine ourselves to be and how we wish to be seen.
