Albert Hahn made this caricature of Abraham Kuyper with ink and graphite. Look at the density of the hatching, the way the parallel lines almost become solid in places, like on the right side of the figure. It’s a great example of how process can be really visible in a drawing. The physical weight of the image is something that really strikes me. There's a real sense of mass in the face. You can see this particularly in the cheeks and around the eyes. The lines are deeply etched, creating a texture that's almost palpable. The stark contrast between the white bandages and the dark, cross-hatched skin creates a dynamic tension, making the image visually arresting. It’s all about how those marks accumulate, layer upon layer. The drawing’s textures echo those of someone like George Grosz, who was also working in Germany at this time, doing similarly savage caricatures. Ultimately, what I love about this piece is its ability to capture a moment in time, freezing it with a sense of humor and critique. It reminds us that art is an ongoing conversation, a playful exchange of ideas that embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
