Editor: This is an engraving by Francis Barlow from the Tate Collections, showing a ram, a shepherd, and sheep. It feels like a calm, ordered pastoral scene. What strikes you most about this piece? Curator: The ram is obviously the star, standing apart from the flock. He's so imposing, almost regal! It makes me wonder if Barlow was elevating the everyday, finding nobility in nature itself. Do you see that too, or am I just projecting? Editor: I see the separation, but I didn't think of "regal"! I was focused on the overall harmony. So, Barlow is seeing more than just farm animals here? Curator: Perhaps. Or maybe he just appreciated a good set of horns! But isn't that the beauty of art? We bring our own flocks of thoughts and feelings to it. Editor: Definitely! I'll never look at sheep the same way again.
