Editor: Here we have Bartolomeo Pinelli’s 1818 engraving, “Marcus Junius Brutus en de andere samenzweerders.” It’s incredibly detailed, with so much line work that gives it almost a cinematic feel. What jumps out to me is the sort of staged quality of it – like everyone is playing a very specific role. What do you see in it? Curator: It is indeed very theatrical. Pinelli’s Neoclassical piece is rife with the politics of its time. Consider the context: Napoleon’s recent defeat and a renewed interest in classical ideals as a way to legitimize power. Pinelli presents Brutus, not necessarily as a hero, but as a figure embroiled in the turbulent currents of Roman power struggles. It begs the question, is Pinelli commenting on contemporary political turmoil through this historical lens? Editor: So, it’s not just a depiction of a historical event, but a reflection on power dynamics? The wolf above the senate seems to indicate that... almost as a warning. Curator: Precisely. The wolf symbolizes Rome, doesn’t it? And the figures almost parade. Consider how images of civic virtue were being used to justify certain political agendas during that era. Who gets to control the narrative, then and now, is what I'm particularly interested in. Are the figures elevated and celebrated as founders, or as controversial characters in a coup d'état? What is glorified and why? Editor: That makes so much sense! Seeing it that way really opens up the dialogue between the past and the present. I had focused on the aesthetics, and I never considered this as speaking about who holds power. Curator: It is about layering contexts, right? Editor: Absolutely. I’ll never look at a Neoclassical piece the same way again! Thanks for pointing all this out. Curator: Likewise; thinking through historical interpretation together offers the richness that solitary readings miss.
