Albrecht Durer created this woodcut, "Nude Woman with the Zodiac", at a time when the old certainties were being challenged by new scientific ideas. The image presents us with a nude female figure encased within a celestial sphere, adorned with the symbols of the zodiac. It was made in the Holy Roman Empire, a place of shifting power dynamics as the reformation began to unfold. Astrology was gaining renewed traction as a means to comprehend the uncertainty of the times, but it was often at odds with Church doctrine. Durer’s artistic style itself reflects these tensions; he was trained in the traditions of the guild system, but he became enamored with Italian Renaissance ideas that emphasized the individual artist as a genius. To fully understand this image, scholars might consult astrological texts, religious documents, and records from the guilds of artists. Art, after all, is always made in a particular place, at a particular time, and is shaped by existing social norms.
