"The Letter E," part of a series called "The Alphabet," was created by Master ES in Germany around 1450-1467, using engraving. At the time, the printing press was transforming Europe, and Master ES was a pioneer of printmaking. Look closely, and you'll see how he uses line and form to render the letter E as a scene of struggle and transformation. Note the bearded man supporting a cacophony of animal conflict on his head: a bizarre mix of mythical beasts and recognizable creatures. What does it all mean? The imagery suggests a world of competition and conflict that may have reflected the social upheaval of 15th-century Europe. By studying prints like these, we can explore the changing role of art in society, and the ways in which artists responded to the challenges of their time. Further research into the artist’s life, coupled with an understanding of period literature and popular culture, could provide additional insights into the meaning of this intriguing image.
