Editor: Here we have an untitled photograph by Jack Gould depicting a Cardinals baseball catcher poised to catch a ball. The composition feels dynamic, almost suspended in time. What do you make of it? Curator: It's a slice of Americana, isn't it? That perfectly blue sky, the anticipation of the catch. I find myself wondering about the story just outside the frame. What's the score? What's at stake? Baseball is about those moments, those potential turning points. Editor: It does feel very still, ready to explode with action. I wonder about the choice of the photographer to leave the photo untitled. Curator: Perhaps Gould wanted us to fill in the blanks, to bring our own memories of the game, our own anxieties and hopes, to this single, pregnant instant. Makes you think about how we construct our own narratives, doesn’t it? Editor: It certainly does.
