Editor: Here we have an untitled photograph by Jack Gould depicting a Cardinal baseball player at bat. The image is small, but it feels monumental. What narratives do you see at play here? Curator: I see a celebration of Americana, certainly, but also a subtle commentary on the performance of masculinity. Consider the intense focus, the posture, the implied power... Editor: It's interesting to consider baseball in that light. A very gendered space. Is Gould reinforcing or questioning that? Curator: Perhaps both. The photograph captures a fleeting moment of athletic prowess, yet it’s also frozen, inviting us to analyze the cultural scripts being enacted. The very lack of a title allows for open interpretation, doesn't it? Editor: It really does. Thanks for making me think about this in a new way! Curator: And thank you for raising such relevant questions! It is so much more than a game.
