This is a landscape photograph by Franz Goerke, showing a hut near Müritz. It’s difficult to make out the details, but it's clear the image is focused on a solitary structure within a natural setting. I love to think about all the things that must have happened to get this image to the place that it is now. The composition emphasizes the textures and tones of the natural environment. There's a clear effort to capture the subtle gradations of light and shadow, creating a sense of depth, that is just so clever. Look at how the light filters through the trees! It draws the eye towards the small building, maybe a barn, maybe a house, nestled at the end of a path. The way Goerke manipulates light is something like Whistler. They both treat landscape as more than just scenery, but rather as a mood, a thought, a feeling. Art is always an ongoing conversation, a language that never stops evolving.
