This print, titled "Helm waaraan een wapenschild hangt", was made by an anonymous artist, using the method of etching. The process begins with a metal plate, coated with a waxy ground. The artist then uses a needle to draw through this ground, exposing the metal underneath. When the plate is dipped in acid, the exposed lines are eaten away, creating grooves. These are then filled with ink, and the plate is pressed onto paper, transferring the image. The controlled bite of the acid allows for incredibly fine detail, as you can see in the elaborate, swirling foliage surrounding the shield. The process, though indirect, is capable of great delicacy. The print medium, and the associated skills of draftsmanship, may explain why the anonymous artist chose to use a traditional heraldic motif; it would have been readily transferable, and relatively easy to produce in multiples. This artwork encourages us to reflect on the historical context and how different creative practices intersect.
