Pedro Coronel made this painting, Canto de soles. Paris, with a layered approach to color and form. It really feels like he’s building up the image, letting shapes emerge from the background almost like he's discovering them, one by one. The textures here are so evocative; it looks like the paint is thin and washy, giving it a dreamlike quality. The pinks and oranges seem to glow, surrounding the yellow, green, and orange figures. There’s a particular spot, where the pink background meets the orange circle, that feels so alive, like the colors are vibrating against each other. It makes me wonder what was on Coronel's mind when he painted this piece. What world was he trying to create, and what stories do these figures tell? Coronel’s work reminds me a little of some of the surrealists, especially Miró, but with a warmth and vibrancy all his own. In the end, I like the way that this painting stays open, inviting you to imagine the world that inspired it.
