This is a painting by Wassily Kandinsky, and judging by the colours and the shapes, it's probably oil on canvas. Look at how the pink circle sits on top of a big black triangle with this yellowy orange background. I just love the way everything is slightly off. I wonder what Kandinsky was thinking when he made it? Maybe he started with the pink circle and then just kept adding lines and shapes until it felt right. The paint looks quite thin, almost like watercolor, which gives it this ethereal quality. And that squiggly red line! It's like a little spark of energy dancing across the surface. You can see how he’s in conversation with other painters here, maybe Klee, maybe Malevich. But he's also doing his own thing, pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. It’s so cool to see how artists play off each other, like a big, ongoing conversation.
