Hans Andersen Brendekilde made this painting of a sower, on what seems like a good day for it, sometime around 1904. Look how the pale sky meets the tilled earth in a harmony of soft blues and browns. You can see the brushstrokes, can’t you? Almost like you’re watching the landscape come together, piece by piece. The materiality here is so key. The dirt is captured with these visible, tactile strokes. Up close, you notice how the paint is applied—thin in some spots, thicker in others, giving texture to the field. The artist is less concerned with a smooth finish and more with revealing the hand in the process. The way he renders the sower's shadow is interesting: a dark, solid shape that anchors him to the earth, a reminder of our connection to the physical world. There’s a touch of Millet here, I think, in the way Brendekilde elevates the everyday labor of working the land. It shows us how art can find beauty in the ordinary.
