Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch created this ornament list with putti and mascarons sometime in the 16th century. The image teems with symbols that reach back into antiquity, like the playful putti and the grotesque mascarons. Consider the mascaron: a face, often frightening or exaggerated, meant to ward off evil. These faces are descendants of ancient Greek theatrical masks, employed in rituals of protection and performance. Like the gorgon Medusa, whose image was displayed on shields to frighten enemies, these faces serve as guardians. Observe how the putti, winged cherubs, frolic amidst garlands. These figures, borrowed from classical art, initially represented pagan spirits of love, but they later transformed into symbols of divine love and innocence in Christian art. The persistence of these motifs reveals our enduring need to mediate between protection and joy, fear and delight. It shows us how potent symbols are, carrying collective memories and subconscious associations. They are a vital reminder of our shared human experience across time.
