Curatorial notes
Lau Heidendael made this watercolor, Atelier Kanaalstraat West 3, sometime during his lifetime. It’s fascinating how he’s built up the image through a series of delicate washes and sketchy lines, isn't it? Like he's feeling his way through the space, letting the image emerge gradually. The palette here is so restrained, almost monochromatic, with these subtle grays and whites, and just a hint of color peeking through. You can really see the texture of the paper coming through in the lighter areas. Look at that cluster of objects in the foreground. Each one is described with just a few strokes, but somehow it all comes together to create this incredible sense of depth and volume. This piece reminds me a little of Giorgio Morandi, with its focus on simple, everyday objects and its quiet, contemplative mood. It’s a reminder that art doesn't always have to be loud or flashy to be powerful. Sometimes, the simplest gestures can be the most moving.
