Jan Toorop made this watercolor, ‘Weg langs kanaal,’ in 1916. It depicts a path beside a canal in the Netherlands, a figure walking along it. The cultural importance of the waterways in the Netherlands cannot be overstated. Water management is a crucial part of the nation’s infrastructure, and canals like this one have served as routes for trade, transport, and communication for centuries. It is no accident that, as industrialisation proceeded apace, artists turned to such scenes again and again. Waterways were a traditional part of Dutch life but canals were also engines of commerce and conduits of migration, so the canal-side image became symbolic of modern life. The historical associations of this image are important in another way. It was made during the First World War, a conflict in which the Netherlands remained neutral. But for many Dutch artists, this was a time of profound introspection about the role of their art in relation to politics and society. To understand the image more fully, research into Dutch history and culture could be done.
