Editor: Here we have a page from a sketchbook by John Flaxman, with two different monument designs. They are rendered in pen and wash. There's such a sense of neoclassical restraint, almost austere. What was Flaxman trying to capture here, do you think? Curator: Looking at these monuments, I sense Flaxman wrestling with permanence and memory. The classical motifs—wreaths, urns, sphinxes—whisper of ancient virtues. It's like he's asking: How do we create lasting tributes in a world of fleeting moments? And what stories do we want these stones to tell? Editor: That's beautiful. I hadn't thought about the storytelling aspect. Curator: Flaxman was a master storyteller, even in his sketches. It makes you wonder, doesn't it, about the narratives etched in stone, and the ones we carry in our hearts? Editor: It really does. I'll look at monuments differently from now on.
