This small photograph, *Kinderen op straat in Vic-sur-Cère*, captures a street scene with children, probably sometime in the late 19th century. It's by an artist called Delizy. The warm sepia tones and small format give it an intimate, almost nostalgic feel. What strikes me is the texture. Look at the stone building in the center, the way the light catches the rough surfaces. Each stone seems to have its own little story, worn smooth by time and weather. Then, there are the dark shadows in the foreground, framing the children who are gathered, like a miniature stage set. It reminds me a little bit of Atget's photographs of Paris, in the way that it captures the ordinary beauty of daily life. The kind of image that is a document but also offers a kind of romantic and poetic vision. Art, after all, isn’t just about what we see, but how we see it. It's an open question, not a closed one.
