Milița Petrașcu’s sculpture presents an intriguing composition, a rider mounted on a horse, seemingly forged from a single mass. The somber tone and rough texture of the material evoke a sense of ancient monumentality, yet the forms are simplified. Petrașcu uses abstraction to challenge traditional modes of representation. The rider and horse, while recognizable, are reduced to their most essential forms, almost to the point of anonymity. This reduction is a conscious artistic choice that destabilizes fixed meanings. It invites us to consider broader themes of human-animal relationships or power dynamics. The semiotic value of the horse as a symbol of strength and nobility is subverted. The rough texture and muted color suggest a more complex relationship, perhaps one marked by labor or constraint. In essence, Petrașcu's sculpture engages with a new way of thinking about representation. It prompts us to recognize the fluid and culturally contingent nature of meaning itself.
