Editor: This sculpture is titled "Mayan Dog" by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, currently residing in the Tate Collections. The use of what appears to be plaster gives it a tactile quality, but also a sense of fragility. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Its form is immediately striking. Observe the interplay between the smooth, rounded surfaces and the sharp, almost brutal incisions suggesting ribs. Do you notice how this juxtaposition affects your perception of the dog? Editor: It makes me think about vulnerability and strength existing at the same time. Curator: Precisely. The material's texture and color also warrant consideration. The mottled pink and white create a visual tension, softening the harshness of the carved lines. Editor: I hadn't considered how the color contributes to the overall effect. Thank you for pointing that out! Curator: The power lies in Paolozzi’s ability to articulate multiple, even contradictory, ideas through form and material.

One of the originators of British pop art, Paolozzi is known for sculptures and collages that incorporate materials from a range of disparate sources. In 1985 he was invited to mix a selection of his own works with the ethnographic displays at the Museum of Mankind in London. Mayan Dog was based on an illustration of a Mayan sculpture that Paolozzi found in a book. It was given a varnish finish to create an antique appearance. Gallery label, August 2004
