Vittorio Pica made this postcard to Philip Zilcken at some point, probably with ink and whatever paper stock was lying around. It makes me think about how so much of artmaking is just taking the ordinary stuff of the world, and marking it up a bit, sending it along. I like how you can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the surface as he writes and draws. The stamps and other markings create an abstract composition alongside the writing, a kind of accidental collaboration between the artist and the postal system! I wonder what Pica was thinking as he sent this out into the world? What conversations or ideas was he hoping to spark with Zilcken? You know, art is like a message in a bottle that we send out, hoping someone will find it and be touched by it. And maybe, just maybe, it will inspire them to make something new, too.
