Adolf Hölzel made this abstract composition sometime in the early 20th century with pastel on paper. The marks are immediate, intuitively placed and seem to capture a moment of pure visual processing, like a painter thinking out loud. The surface is full of texture, the colours are vibrant and playfully arranged, a feast for the eyes. Look closely, and you’ll see how Hölzel layers the pastel strokes, creating depth and dimension. The electric pinks, purples, and blues contrast with the warmer greens, yellows, and oranges. The colours push and pull against each other, creating a sense of movement and energy. Notice the dark blue mark towards the bottom right corner, it’s both a shape in itself and a shadow that defines the space around it. Hölzel's piece reminds me of Hilma af Klint's early abstract experiments, both artists pushing the boundaries of representation and exploring the spiritual dimensions of art. Like Klint, Hölzel invites us to embrace ambiguity and find meaning in the interplay of colour, line, and form.
