This small, circular bronze medal, known as a "rekenpenning" or counting token, was minted in Brussels in 1599. The obverse depicts a symbolic representation of the city of Brussels, with the lion of Brabant, holding a sword and shield, mounted on a carriage. The reverse shows Albrecht and Isabella of Austria, the regents of the Netherlands at the time, riding a horse and raising their hand in salute. This piece commemorates the grand entry of the couple into Brussels. The medal, now in the Rijksmuseum, is a historical artefact that provides a glimpse into the life of the city and the rulers during the late 16th century.
