Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki created this black ink artwork titled 'Menselijke genoegens' at an unknown date, which translates to 'Human Pleasures'. Reflecting the social and cultural norms of the 18th century, this piece depicts a series of vignettes which give us insight into the artist's world and his perception of the human condition. Through these scenes, Chodowiecki explores the range of human experiences, from the refined enjoyment of music in high society to the more primal pleasures of physical labor and intimate encounters. Consider the panel with the exhausted laborers as they rest with their animals, or the cramped quarters of a birthing scene. Chodowiecki seems to be inviting us to reflect on the spectrum of human life, and perhaps, to question where true happiness lies. As you consider this work, reflect on the ways in which our understanding of 'human pleasures' has evolved, and what aspects remain unchanged across the centuries.
