Dorothea Rockburne made this print, Triangle, Rectangle, Small Square, using drafting vellum, and scoring and folding it to create subtle tonal variations. There's a sense of geometric precision about this work, but I'm also struck by its material delicacy. The beige and cream palette makes me think of skin. Thin black lines accentuate the crisp edges of the shapes, but then there's this surprise: a loose, slightly wobbly red arc. It's a bit like a rouge blush on an otherwise cool and considered surface. This single, almost freehand curve adds a playful counterpoint to the geometry, bringing an unexpected note of warmth and humanity. Rockburne's work reminds me a little of Sol LeWitt, but with a touch more sensuality, maybe because of her interest in process and material. What do you think?
