Editor: We’re looking at "The Three Archangels with the Young Tobias," an oil painting attributed to Francesco Botticini, dating back to the Italian Renaissance. There's such a calm formality in the composition. What story do you think Botticini is trying to tell? Curator: It feels to me like Botticini has composed a family portrait, with a kind of celestial twist! It draws upon the Old Testament story of Tobias, guided and protected on his journey by the Archangels. That young boy holds a fish – the source of the miraculous cure he later uses to heal his father's blindness. I like to imagine Botticini pondering the responsibility that comes with protecting the innocent and the vulnerabilities. I wonder what this family reminds him of? Editor: Ah, I didn't realize it was Tobias! Now that you point it out, that’s clearly a fish. Do you think there is a deliberate contrast with Michael the Archangel? Michael appears ready for battle with his armour and sword. It gives the work such dramatic range. Curator: Absolutely, there's a real sense of active protection versus serene guidance. It almost seems Botticini has a sense of humour in how literal his characters appear. Do you see that adorable lamb? Following, a furry little symbol of innocence? I wonder what he thinks of sheep. The angels' colorful wings are beautiful! I feel like he lets himself be loose with color! I appreciate such a playful rendition of something so theologically serious. Editor: It does bring a new appreciation to Botticini's interpretation! Curator: I learned something as well, how beautiful his little lamb is!
