Michael Riccitelli made this high chair drawing using what looks like graphite on paper. The subtle gradations of tone create the form; it's all about the process of building up light and shadow. It gives the chair this kind of quiet, stoic presence. Look at the way Riccitelli uses shading to define the contours of the chair's legs. The graphite is so finely applied, almost polished, giving the surface a smooth, reflective quality. The choice of such a humble, everyday object elevates it, making us consider its design and purpose. It reminds me a bit of the early minimalist drawings of Agnes Martin, in how the artist is finding so much beauty in something so simple. Ultimately, this drawing embraces ambiguity. Is it a portrait, an architectural study, or something in between? It's up to us to decide.
