This is Yuri Zlotnikov, *Two Compositions*, and it looks like it’s made with some kind of marker or brush pen. It’s a riot of marks—dashes, dots, squiggles, and blocks of color. I love to imagine the artist making this, standing at a table, maybe, just letting the hand go, seeing what happens when you put red next to yellow, or a blobby purple next to a crisp black line. What was Zlotnikov thinking? Maybe he just wanted to see how all these marks could play together, like notes in a crazy song. The surface is alive with energy; it’s not trying to be a picture of anything except itself. This kind of exploration feels related to what other artists are doing, like Kandinsky’s abstract improvisations, or maybe even the playful doodles of Miró. It's all about the joy of making, that conversation artists have across time, inspiring each other to see and feel in new ways. It’s a kind of freedom, to let the painting lead, and see where it takes you.
