Simon Moulijn made this drawing of the Ter Horst hunting lodge with pen and ink, giving it a unique sense of depth. Look at the density of marks! They show us a process of observing and then building up the image from dark to light. It’s a reminder that artmaking is about adding, subtracting, and constantly adjusting. The marks create texture, almost like a gentle breeze is rustling through the leaves. Notice how Moulijn uses hatching to create shadows, giving the foliage a sense of volume. The way he renders the building itself, with a more linear approach, contrasts nicely with the organic shapes of the trees. It's like he's playing with different languages within the same drawing. This piece reminds me of work by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, that same attention to detail, and love for landscape. Ultimately, art isn’t about answers, but about opening up new perspectives.
