Simon Moulijn made this drawing of the Villa Groot Haesebroek, from the garden, using pen and ink. The artist's hand dances across the page here, doesn't it? I can almost see Moulijn out in the garden, squinting in the sunlight and trying to make out the details of the villa through the trees. It's like he's in a conversation with the building, with nature, letting the lines and textures emerge from the nib of his pen, in response. What I love is how he renders the light filtering through those trees, using delicate, feathery strokes. Look at the way the lines vary in thickness, creating depth and shadow. It’s more than just a picture, it's a mood, a moment captured in ink. He's not trying to be photorealistic; he's going for something more visceral, more immediate. Moulijn reminds us that art isn't just about what we see, but how we feel and interpret the world around us. And how we all, as artists, are just trying to make sense of it all, one mark at a time.
