The Spacious Studio 1871 - 1933

This bamboo wrist rest, titled “The Spacious Studio,” was made by Jian Guzhai. While seemingly simple, this object reveals a lot about the culture of calligraphy in China. Bamboo, a common material, is here elevated through meticulous carving, the smooth finish achieved with painstaking labour. Note the elegant curve, perfectly contoured to support the wrist, and the incised inscription infilled with white pigment. The characters identify Guzhai's studio, suggesting a personalized connection between artist and tool. But consider also the social context: calligraphy was traditionally a pursuit of the educated elite. Objects like this, while functional, were also symbols of status and taste.
