The Spacious Studio 1871 - 1933

"The Spacious Studio" is a small, rectangular inkstone made of black lacquer, a material common in Chinese inkstones, and inscribed with Chinese characters. The inkstone is carved with a band of incised dots around the top and bottom, and is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. These types of inkstones were typically used by Chinese calligraphers and painters to prepare their inks and are considered an integral part of traditional East Asian art practices.
