This is "The Green Gem Hall" by Jian Guzhai, a small piece made with incredible care. Look at the carving; it's so deliberate, like each cut was a tiny decision. You can tell the artist loved the process. The texture is so important here. The way the light catches on those carved edges, you can almost feel the wood grain. It’s not just about what it depicts, but how it feels to look at it. Those lines running through the rock-like forms on the left remind me of geological strata or veins in marble. It’s not exactly a hidden image, but it invites you to trace it with your eyes, like doodling in your notebook. It reminds me a little of Alfred Jenson's use of line as a form of symbolic mark-making. The beauty in this piece is that it embraces ambiguity. You could look at it a hundred times and still discover something new.
